February's MyGlam Bag - An Overview

Hi Gorgeous people!

I think most of you have heard of the monthly subscription service started by YouTube guru, Michelle Phan, MyGlam Bag.  It is very similar to Birch Box or one of the many other $10 monthly services.

MyGlam Bag is very new and this is only their 3rd bag.  I didn't sign up until very early December so I missed out on the premier launch.  When I saw what was in the December bag a few weeks later, though, I was so bummed I missed it!

This month's bag was very face mask heavy (we got a full size face mask in last month's bag!) and my overall opinion is that this month's bag SUCKS.  :(  I'm not very happy with it and I ask this: why would they include several face masks in this bag after giving us a full size face mask product in last month's bag??  Spread them out!

Here is a breakdown of this month's bag with pictures:

I love the style of the bag for February! It's bright, fuschia pink and perfect for the "love" month theme. One of my favorite things about this month's bag is... well, the bag. ;)

A snapshot of everything that came inside. I didn't take a picture of the card insert but you can click on the photo for a larger image if you want to see it a bit more.

Two separately wrapped Milk and Dark chocolates from Ghirardelli were inside this box. Very cute and I thought it was a great touch for the theme of the bag. I split the chocolates with my husband as I was typing this post! LOL

SHINE CONTROL BY X OUT (This is not sold individually. It only comes as part of a kit on the company's website (along with an acne cream treatment and it retails for $19.95 US) - While I don't need this for myself, I can throw it in my kit and see how it performs on my clients. I know a lot of people were upset that they got this because they don't have dry skin and therefore, can't use this.  I've also seen lots of people complaining because you can't customize these bags more so that you get products you can use/try. For example, last month's bag had a concealer duo from Sheer Cover.  Mine was in the shade 'light', which is perfect for me but what about the people who have deeper skin tones? Well, you can always gift the things that don't work or you can't use to your bestie, your sister, friend or brother!
    What it is:
  • X Out Shine Control is an oil-free moisturizer with a mattifying complex that helps to instantly absorb excess oil.
    What it does:
  • X Out Shine Control is designed to help moisturize the skin while helping to minimize the appearance of shine, helping to create the perfect canvas to apply your makeup. It's the ideal primer to add to your daily beauty regimen as it hydrates while helping to control oil and mattifying the skin.
What else you need to know:
  • Oil-Free
  • Non-Comedogenic
  • Created by dermatologists Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, the makers of Proactiv®, America's number one acne system

$100 NuMe PROFESSIONAL STYLING TOOLS & HAIR EXTENSIONS GIFT CARD (Average product cost in the NuMe shop is $160.00 US) - This was disappointing because it wasn't a product in the bag but rather "credit/money" towards the purchase of an item which will cost you additional money on the back end. (What is my monthly subscription service for again?) The major other issues with this is that this glorified coupon expires in August of this year and it is very limited to what you can use it toward. Ugh! There are just too many restrictions and if you're not in the market for an expensive hairdryer, flat iron or hair extensions, then this is a throw away. Your minimum cost out of pocket with this "gift card" is $60 and that doesn't include shipping.

CINDERELLA MASK by DEAD SEA PREMIER (Retail $149.99 US) - This face mask is a high-end brand and if you were to go and pick this up yourself, it'd cost you $73 per ounce!  Yup... a little jar of this baby will cost you $150 for a 2.04 fl. oz. jar.  For that price, Cinderella's Fairy Godmother better show up herself and slather that stuff on my face FOR me!! Hahaha! Seriously though, it sounds very luxurious and I can't wait to try it. Now I know why the samples were teeny tiny! LOL
    What it is:
  • This new professional mask uses essential oils and active ingredients blended in a secret process enabling the skin to instantly revive itself within 5-10 minutes, resulting in a "lifting" effect and with fresh and younger looking skin.
    What it does:
  • This mask stimulates and activates the metabolism of the skin tissue and, in return, it reduces evidence of wrinkles. This mask does miracles and that's why it is also named Cinderella Mask.
What else you need to know:
  • This product is highly rated by customers online

GOJI BERRY FACIAL MASK SACHET by FREEMAN (Retail $11.97 US. MyGlam Bag subscribers are being offered the full size mask at a discount for $10.00 US) - The full size mask we got in last month's bag was also by Freeman.  I was disappointed because I already had a new, full size mask from last month's bag and you can pick these up at the drug store -- they're quite affordable.  I want products in my bag that maybe aren't readily available to me or that aren't from my local drug store.
What it is:
o   Hydrate skin with Goji Berry Facial Hydration Mask, which helps calm, hydrate and nourish for soft, supple skin.
What it does:
o   This gel mask is ideal for stressed, dehydrated skin types. Nourishes, replenishes, and rebalances skin’s equilibrium to improve texture and moisture retention leaving it soft and supple.
What else you need to know:
o   Goji Berry Extract
o   Chamomile Flower Extract
o   Avocado Oil
o   Pomegranate

ROLL ON SHIMMER by NYX (Retail $4.50 US)- The color I got was Walnut. This product is marketed as a roll on shimmer for eyes, face and body.  I'm not sure how you could use most of the available colors on your body.  If you look at the colors on their website, they're not all universal for everyday people, for everyday wear on the "eyes, face and body". Again, I lucked out and got a great neutral shade. I can mix this with lotion and rub it down the front of the legs down the shins (helps make legs look longer and slimmer!), across the collarbone to call special attention to that area or over the shoulders and decolletage. This color would be great on olive to medium skin tones for body use.  The sparkle is a tad chunky so I don't think this would work on the face.

Here are some swatches!

Left: Swatched over Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Right: w/no primer

Left: Swatched over Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Right: w/no primer

Left: Blended out (primer), Right: Blended out (no primer)

Left: Blended out (primer), Right: Blended out (no primer)
    What it is:
  • Loose powder with intense shimmer and glitter. Simply apply to your desired body part by rolling on the product and control the intensity of the pigment yourself!
    What it does:
  • Dazzle your face and body with Roll On Shimmer! Jazz up your look with any of the 16 brilliant shades that wears on eyes, face and body.

All in all, a bust of a bag but it's still very early on and they are finding their footing.  Everyone keeps comparing the last two bags with their very first bag and my response to that is: You have to come out of the gate strong! That's why they had so many high- end makeup brands and full size products.  It's pretty standard for a company to do that. Ever go to a casino opening weekend? The slots are reeeaaaal loose!  I'm in it for the long haul though because I knew that it might be a bumpy ride in the beginning.  Personally, I'd like to see more makeup products in the coming bags and less coupons and face masks. ;-)

Of all the monthly subscription services, I'm still glad I chose MyGlam Bag over the others because I don't like a lot of what I see from other bloggers' posts.

Do you subscribe to any monthly beauty sample service?  Do any of you subscribe to MyGlam Bag? What do you think of it?  I'd love to hear your experiences and opionions!

Let Your Beauty Shine During Cancer Treatment!

By Jackie Clark, Research Assistant for the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance

Jackie joined the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance in 2009 as a research assistant after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in fitness and nutrition. Jackie's interest in health and wellness spawned into fashion for an overall better outer appearance from her desire to treat her body well. Jackie saw the power in fashion and how it can enhance a woman's overall self-confidence levels. From there, Jackie’s experience in technical and medical research has allowed her to assist in the development of medical content and outreach efforts, with specializations in alternative care, cancer support programs, and social media campaigns.

Let Your Beauty Shine During Cancer Treatment!

Cancer is ugly. You are beautiful. You can still feel beautiful, even if you are living with cancer.

In between all those dreaded trips to the doctor’s office, it might be time to pamper yourself with a trip to the cosmetic counter. Makeup is a great way to give yourself a confidence boost.

Okay, glamour isn’t exactly the first word that comes to mind when a woman thinks of cancer. Faced with the physical and mental symptoms of living with a cancer diagnosis, many women let the concept of fashion and beauty slide to the bottom of their priority list. However, adding little pampering touches to your daily routine can help you feel beautiful when you need it most.

Aside from making you look gorgeous, makeup can have an important positive psychological effect.  There is lots of evidence that a positive mental attitude can aid in the battle against cancer. Many doctors who work with patients affected by cancers, such as mesothelioma cancer due to asbestos exposure, have noted that paying attention to personal grooming can boost the outlook of someone battling the disease.

Fun, feminine makeup can be an escape from the fear and apprehension that comes along with a cancer diagnosis. Even if you have never considered yourself much of a “girly” type before, getting into makeup can bring some color into your world. Something as simple as pink lip gloss can brighten your overall appearance and provide a real confidence boost. If you are undergoing strenuous cancer treatment or have been losing sleep due to worry, makeup can be an important tool in keeping up a healthy glow. It can be especially helpful to dab a lightly tinted concealer beneath your eyes and apply a light rosy blush to the apples of your cheeks. There are a number of organic makeup products available, which will actually soothe and protect your skin. Cosmetics, which use organic mineral pigments and organic plant extracts, can naturally protect and filter your skin from damaging sun exposure.

The goal of wearing makeup is not the hide the fact that you have cancer, or cover up the physical symptoms, but rather to help you feel comfortable and vibrant in your own skin. By pampering yourself, you are letting your inner beauty shine outward and showing the world that caner has not gotten the best of you.

LOTD + Video Tutorial: Dramatic Arabic Makeup Look

One of my really good friends, who is Egyptian and also a fellow makeup artist, inspired me to do this look.  I had SO MUCH FUN doing this!!!!  This does lean more towards the intermediate application difficulty, however I think everyone should try it out... or their version of this look anyway. ;-)

It's not often I do an Arabic look and I don't really do them on myself so it was a blast to take some time to do this LOTD and a video tutorial.  (I know it's been FOREVER since I have done a tutorial but I haven't been in one place long enough to commit to doing them again... until now. Yay!)  The hard part is doing the eyeliner and when you do something dramatic like this on yourself, it's much harder to do than if you were doing this on another person.  Practice, practice, practice!  You'll see mine isn't perfect but who cares!?  Grab your makeup and your brushes and give it a go.  Have fun and I hope you like it...

REVIEW: Skin79 Super+ BB Cream Pink

Love it or Leave it?  TRY IT!!

I want to say up front that if you do not purchase from a reputable seller, you risk getting a fraudulent and fake BB cream.  There are tons of websites and blogs out there to help you spot if you've purchased a fake.  Simply type "how to spot fake bb cream" into google and you'll have your choice of websites.  The Beauty Bin has the best side-by-side comparison breakdown of fake and real that I've seen online and I highly recommend that you check it out.  The prices vary depending on where you buy from, but again BE CAUTIOUS and do your research.  If you can buy one of these for under $10, chances are it's probably a fake.

  • Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5
  • Wear: 4 out of 5
  • Packaging: 3 out of 5
  • Quality: 3 out of 5
  • Ease of Use: 4 out of 5
  • Would I buy again? Probably not
  • Price: Ranges from $15 - 25 US

Where to Buy:
  • Amazon
  • Pretty & Cute
  • eBay

They describe it as:

A 3-in-1 Beauty Balm that whitens and brightens, helps improve wrinkles by strengthening the elasticity of the skin and has a UV sun protectant of SPF25.

Advantages:
  • Very lightweight
  • Long lasting
  • Makes the skin look luminous

Disadvantages:
  • Comes in one shade, not suitable for skin tones darker than light.
  • The packaging is bulky, not great for travel or a kit.
  • It casts a white sheen on the face so not suitable to wear in public for everyone depending on how fair/light your skin tone is.

Overall Opinion:
This won't replace your foundation! I used it like a foundation because that's how they market this product but I wouldn't use it like one.  I'm not sure how I would use this product to be honest.  I think I would wear this around the house on days I don't go out for the brightening and anti-wrinkle properties.

For application, I used a foundation brush and my fingers to put on two thin coats (I prefer the foundation brush application).  I still needed to use concealer to cover up blemishes and under eye circles though.  It is a nice light weight formula but perhaps too light weight as it didn't give me the coverage as promised.  It gave a nice luminosity to the skin that lasted a good 10+ hours for me.  You will notice that the cream has a very obvious gray coloring to it initially but that will go away after it oxidizes on your skin in about 20 mins, if it looks gray on you at all.  After about 4 - 5 hours, my skin looked too luminous and I needed to use some MAC blot powder to tone it down a bit.

This particular brand isn't for everyone. It only comes in one shade and with the lack of shades, people with darker skin tones will look like they have a mask on.  If you're very fair to light, you're good to go with this product.  I'm very light and the white cast that this put on my face was still a touch noticeable on me so I probably wouldn't wear this out of the house. By the by, the white cast is from the bleaching agents/ingredients in the cream.

Betty Says: It's not the holy grail or fountain of youth of beauty products. I'm still trying out other bb creams and have yet to find one I absolutely love. Stay tuned for my two other reviews!

How about you?  Have you tried any BB Creams?  What are you thoughts?

REVIEW Follow-up: Avon Ideal Flawless Foundation

Hey Gorgeous folks!

I'm back with a review follow-up from my original review on a ton of Avon products, including the Ideal Flawless Foundation, which you can find here.

If you read my original review of the foundation, you know that it didn't work so great and I had less than stellar results.  Out of the gate, this foundation applies beautifully and looks gorgeous on the skin, however after a few hours it breaks down (which is pretty quick for a foundation!) and casts a wet and oily looking sheen on the face.

So I tried working with the foundation and using different primers underneath to see if that would help.  I also tried different application techniques as well.

While I tried several different primers with mostly the same end result with the foundation, the best primer that seemed to stave off the oily mess that my face would eventually become was MAC Matte. For those unfamiliar with this product, it's a matte-ifying cream, that acts like a powder and gives a matte texture to the skin but has a satin finish.

With all that in mind, what is the take away for me (and YOU) here? Why do I have to work so hard for a middle of the road foundation to work for me? I don't!

Betty Says: There are much better, cheaper and easier products that you can buy that you just put on and go and not have to worry about it moving or making you look like a grease ball in a few hours. S-K-I-P IT!

MASSIVE Review and LOTD with Avon!

Hey Gorgeous folks,

Today is a review and look using mostly Avon products.  If you are a follower of my blog, you know that I use everything from drugstore to Avon brand to high end products.  I'm certainly no snob when it comes to products - I'm of the mind set that if it works and performs well, I don't care what the brand is. And of course, the cheaper the better please!! ;)

Let's start with the product breakdown and some pictures shall we!?

Face:
  • Avon Magix Skin Perfecting Base (primer)
  • Avon Ideal Flawless Invisible Coverage Liquid Foundation SPF 15 in Light Beige
  • Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer (under eyes)
  • MAC Studio Fix concealer (blemishes)
  • CoverFX Loose Setting Powder
  • Sephora Collection Bronzer #3 in Los Cabos
  • Avon Be Blushed Cheek Color in Pink Melon
  • MAC Azalea Blossom Blush Ombre (to set cream blush)
  • mark. Good Glowing Mosaic Blush in Hush Baby (highlight)
Eyes:
  • MAC Charcoal Brown e/s (brows)
  • Too Faced Shadow Insurance
  • Avon True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Romantic Mauves
  • Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Gel Liner for Brown Eyes (the purple pot to line eyes)
  • Avon Ultra Luxury Eyeliner in Eggplant
  • Loreal Voluminous Mascara
Lips:
  • Avon Extra Lasting Lipgloss in Perpetual Pink

REVIEW of featured Products:

Avon Magix Face Perfector (primer) ($10.00US) - This is great!! I think it's better than drugstore brands and rivals Clinque's Pore Refining Instant Perfector. Not to mention, Reese Witherspoon is a spokesperson for Avon and truly does wear the makeup! She wore this under her makeup to the Golden Globes. TIP: skip the foundation and wear this alone with a little blush or bronzer!
Betty Says: If you're in the market for a new primer and want to try something new, skip the drugstore and high end shops and head straight to the Avon online store or your nearest rep. This is a fantastic affordable one that won't disappoint. Hey, if it's good enough for Reese and an awards show event, it's good enough for anyone!

Avon Ideal Flawless Invisible Coverage Liquid Foundation SPF 15 ($11.00US) - This foundation is medium to full coverage and does have a bit of a perfumey scent. I personally am not bothered by scents but you may want to ask your Avon rep for a sample before committing to buy if scented makeup is a big issue for you.

I wanted to like this foundation because it applies very similarly to one of my favorite foundations - MAC Matchmaster Foundation, however, after 3 hours of wear, it started to settle into my pores (and possibly lines I would imagine as well if you have them). After 4 - 5 hours, it appeared very oily and splotchy on my skin. It was no bueno! By the 6th hour, my face looked like an oil slick. My skin is normal/dry and I have no oiliness at all. I did set the foundation with a light dusting of CoverFx Loose Setting Powder and this still happened to my dry face. Hmmm...  I'm going to try this again with a different primer and see how it stands up.

This is what I looked like about 4 hours after application of the foundation:

I look like I just ran a marathon! I appear sweaty and shiny - not fresh and clean like I did a few hours ago. :(

The makeup has virtually slid off and all around my face. I appear very shiny and oily.

I moved my bangs so you could see it all - the foundation has moved the concealer and blemishes are visible.

Betty Says: This would be a no buy for me because I can't use it on anyone - clients with oily skin would look worse and clients with dry skin would look greasy. If it performs better with different primers underneath I'll consider it but for right now it's a big N-O. :(

Avon Be Blushed Cheek Color cream in Pink Melon ($8.00US) - this is a very affordable cream blusher stick. The shade blended out pretty sheer, which I really liked.  This product is perfect for building the amount of color, definition and density that you want. They swipe on very creamily so a light hand is suggested. I'd love to try the other shades because I really like this product.
Betty Says: Stock up on these when they go on sale! Even still, the price can't be beat at regular retail.

mark. Good Glowing Mosaic Blush in Hush Baby ($8.00US) - I've already reviewed these in the past but I'll recap quickly here again for anybody new to my blog or just a refresher of what I think of these! :)  I love these!!  They're fantastic and I love using Hush Baby as a highlight - it's perfect for a soft, pinky champagne highlight.  Everyone I've ever used this on always asked me later what the product was that I used so they could go and buy one for themselves because they just absolutely fell in love with it! Hahaha Yes, it's that good.
Betty Says: If you don't have one of these, go git you one! They are so universal and depending on which color you get and what skin tone you have, you can wear them as blush, bronzer, highlight or eyeshadow. And you know I love me some multi-use products!

Avon True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Romantic Mauves ($9.00US) - I was very impressed by the quality and payoff of these eyeshadows. They are soft, easy to apply and blend like a dream. The quad retails for only $9 and omg what a BARGAIN.  I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance as a base and these lasted me all day and and night, even with my left eye tearing from a weird allergy attack. The BONUS thing you'll notice about all of the quads is that they each have one dark "blender" color. I love it when a company thinks these things through! Seriously.
Betty Says: If you need eyeshadows and don't know where to begin, or are looking to fill in some voids in your own collection - start HERE. You won't be disappointed.

Avon Ultra Luxury Eyeliner in Eggplant ($6.00US) - Not my favorite purple eyeliner out there and there are so many out there that are are just better quality with better results for the same price or less. This liner is reviewed quite highly on Avon's website so take this with a grain salt. I found that the liner tugged on my eye and didn't have much of a payoff. I had to work to put the color down and if I wanted anything in the waterline, forget it. I used this pencil to apply my gel liner with! Ha! Actually, this pencil is designated for applying purple and black gel liners because I'd rather use my other purple eyeliners than this one.
Betty Says: Skip it.

Avon Extra Lasting Lipgloss in Perpetual Pink (Reg. $9.00US/Sale $4.99US) - The pigmentation in these glosses are great.  I find that the lighter shades don't last as long as the darker shades, of course this could be because the darker shades tend to leave a slight stained hue behind.  They are a bit tacky feeling on the lips and have the faintest bit of a sweet scent. These lip glosses aren't quite extra lasting, about 3 04 hours for the lighter shades and 4 -5 hours of wear for the darker shades for me -- about half the time of the "8 hours of wear" Avon promises. TIP: If the tackiness of the gloss bothers you (it's minimal but if you don't like it), try dabbing a small amount of vaseline in the center of your mouth. This will help put a thin "shield" over the gloss but won't disturb the color or break down the "lasting" effect.
Betty Says: Go for it! They're on sale right now, too! This is a perfect gloss for someone who doesn't wear lipstick but wants a bit more color pay off than their stand by lip gloss.

Have you tried Avon products before? What are some of your favorite products? Share in the comments below. I'd love to know!

FTC: All Avon products were sent to me except for the Good Glowing Blush and the Be Blushed Cheek Color, which I purchased with my own money. All reviews are my own honest thoughts.  Blah blah blah gobbledygook!
